Four Days, Four Minutes
small actions, generating momentum
For the next four days, spend four minutes with something that makes you feel creatively alive. There’s no finished piece to produce and no right way to do it.
The night before, choose the time and place for tomorrow’s four minutes.
Set a timer for four minutes and begin, even if you don’t feel ready.
Follow the day’s prompt. Each day builds on the one before.
Write it down here. Your answers stay on this device as you type.
Wherever you are with your work
If you’ve been too busy to make anything, do just the four minutes to begin with and stop there. If you’re already making, use the four minutes to step to one side of your current work. Either way, you’re injecting excitement and anticipation back into your studio process.
Day 1 of 4
The Activator
What flashes up first?
Think about what interests you and notice what flashes up in your mind’s eye: an artist, a work, a material, a film, a person, a place, a piece of writing. Spend four minutes summarising what it is about it that draws you in and fascinates you. Be precise about what draws you, and leave open where it might lead.
Day 2 of 4
Make
Respond to Day 1.
Make anything in response to Day 1: a drawing, even a thumbnail sketch, a new move on your current work, or maybe start cooking a meal with new spices.
Day 3 of 4
Follow the trail
What is alive and exciting here?
Ask yourself again: what is alive and exciting here? Using whatever you have to hand, jump straight in and make a new response in four minutes. Feel free to laugh at yourself as you rush. You should feel your energy shift.
Day 4 of 4
Revisit Day 1
Go back to your Activator.
List four ways you could deepen your interest, then leave yourself a voice note explaining why this holds your interest. Four minutes for the list; the voice note can come any time that day. Maybe it’s changing. That’s welcome too: just keep following and connecting with the trail of what is alive for you.
