Artist Readings
An invitation to look at your work and life in a completely different way
"Marijke has a special way of gently probing and guiding, which led me towards breakthrough moments of self reflection and a renewed sense of confidence and self-worth."— Laura Nifhlaibhin, artist
An artist reading is a new kind of studio conversation, where we will be exploring the kinds of questions you are asking yourself about your work. Above all, it's about seeing where you are holding yourself back and recognising what is looking to emerge.
Why let old heartbreak or assumptions decide your future direction? We all have had to contend with disappointments and certain expectations on the paths we follow as artists. What I have discovered is that it is a real privilege to accompany artists through a reading and a journey into their interior lives. We all carry parts of ourselves that are original, hopeful and full of possibility. They are often surprisingly vulnerable and, more often than not, they need protecting—especially from ourselves.
Rather than letting conditioning or assumptions determine where you are going next, a reading is a chance to look at what wants to become visible.
I use illustrated tarot cards because images have a striking capacity to get us to look at ideas from a different angle. In doing so, we begin to explore the treasures of the subconscious mind. This isn't fortune telling, but a way of revealing the unspoken contracts we have made with ourselves—about success, failure, love, money, belonging or what we believe is possible.
For me there are no bad cards; they simply reflect different aspects of yourself. The cards can give you a jolt of recognition, act like a good friend who encourages you, or tell you a truth that ultimately proves liberating. At other times they can be funny and even disarming.
Alongside the reading, you can choose to receive an original drawing created in response to the card that feels most transformative for your practice.
I love the multiple meanings of the word draw.
To draw.
To draw out.
To be drawn towards.
To draw into being what is possible.
Rather than illustrating the reading, the drawing seeks to draw out and evoke what is waiting to emerge.
Whether you choose the reading on its own or also commission the accompanying drawing—which can be placed in your studio like a talisman or mascot, cheering you on—I hope you leave with the sense that certain outcomes are not inevitable and that "this is just the way things are" is rarely the whole story. We have far more agency than we often imagine.
Perhaps the greatest gift of the reading is discovering that many of the things we thought were inevitable are simply assumptions that have gone unquestioned.
Or, to paraphrase Rainer Maria Rilke, we are invited to live new questions.
What we might explore
recurring themes, symbols, and tensions within the work
creative blocks or periods of transition
questions of visibility, identity, and artistic direction
emotional or symbolic undercurrents shaping the practice
repetition, self-protection, and resistance
artistic lineage, influence, and relational dynamics
the relationship between the work and the wider ecosystem around it
what feels most alive within the practice — and what may be obstructing or muting that signal
These are not conventional critiques or predictive tarot readings.
The cards function as symbolic tools for reflection and perception — a way of opening new conversations around the work, the artist, and the patterns shaping creative practice.
Single Studio Oracle Session — €75 (€150 with Drawing)
90-minute Zoom session
A symbolic reflection session exploring a particular project, creative block, transition, or recurring pattern within your practice.
Before the session, you send:
a selection of five images
optional notes or writing
and a few thoughts about what currently feels unresolved, repetitive, alive, or in transition within the work
Afterwards, you receive:
a recording of the conversation
photographs of the card spreads
a clearer sense of the next step in your practice
a set of questions and prompts drawn from the session, so you can keep working with what has come into view.
A unique drawing based on the most significant card for you.
Three-Session Studio Oracle Journey — €210 (€285 with Drawing)
A longer process for artists wanting sustained reflection, accountability, and support around a project or creative transition.
Together we explore:
what is trying to emerge through the work
what may be obscuring or constraining its potential
recurring emotional or symbolic patterns
practices, rhythms, and structures that support creative momentum and clarity
Designed to help projects:
radiate more fully
shed what feels misaligned or overburdened
and develop through ongoing dialogue, reflection, and perceptual refinement
After each session you will receive:
a recording of the conversation
photographs of the card spreads
a clearer sense of the next step in your practice
a set of questions and prompts drawn from the session, so you can keep working with what has come into view.
You will also receive one drawing that you can place in your studio as a mascot or talisman that is based upon the card that is most relevant to how you view yourself now as an artist.
What artists have said
“It felt illuminating, nurturing, and uncannily accurate.” Monica
"My session with Marijke was a very special gift. Her reading and interpretations were so insightful and helpful and I was walking on clouds afterwards."
"This will stay with me for a long time." Laura Nifhlaibhin
“A psycho-advisory session that worked like a midwifery of practice.”
“The reading organised fragments of self-knowledge and made them visible as structures and diagrams.”
“The cards opened up wonderful spaces: up and down, back and forth, future and past.” Karolina
“You were gentle and attentive in the true sense of attention: waiting and listening.” Monica
If you sense there’s a deeper structure shaping your work but can’t quite see it yet, the reading is a way to bring it into view.
About me
My background as a painter informs everything I do.
For many years my work has explored atmosphere, perception, and ideas of what may be lurking in the collective unconscious and how this is framed.
Alongside my exhibition practice, I taught drawing at London College of Fashion for nine years and I love facilitating conversations around artistic practice and community.
The Artist Readings bring these strands together. They are not separate from my painting practice. They are another way of asking the same question, how are you currently framing your perceptions and what else wants to become visible?
